Taking your Medicine Elective in Nepal will give you the opportunity to work with highly skilled and experienced practitioners, while also working in under resourced hospitals and clinics with basic facilities.
Our placements are very busy and you will learn a lot by shadowing the doctors. Your role will be strictly observational. As volunteers are not licensed medical professionals in Nepal, the government does not permit any practical involvement in hospitals. You will only get involved with practical work during outreaches. However, you will have the chance to gain an understanding of health care in the developing world, as the facilities are quite basic compared to those in the west.
Students work at a variety of placements in hospitals and rehabilitation centres for disabled children in the Kathmandu Valley or Chitwan, which is around 6 hours from Kathmandu.
You can choose to work in a referral centre dealing with functional mobility of physically disabled children. We also have placements in the field of trauma, orthopaedics and rehabilitation, and also in a teaching hospital that provides low cost healthcare to the local community.
Medical Elective students will also have the opportunity to attend monthly lectures or workshops.
Planning Your Elective Placement
Projects Abroad will liaise with your university where required to ensure your requirements for your Elective module can be met. Our in country staff are experienced in supporting Elective students. Your placement will depend upon your medical specialism.
Elective students working at one of our hospitals may be able to take part in outreach programmes, which are organised by the hospital. These programmes take place on a monthly or bi-monthly basis outside of the rainy season (June to September) and offer free health checks and basic medication to suburban or remote communities in Nepal.
Elective students working in Chitwan may have the opportunity to visit local schools to lead health and hygiene classes.
Medicine Electives students looking to volunteer in Nepal should speak at least intermediate English.
While undertaking your Medicine Elective in Nepal you will live with a local host family. When you aren't at work there is plenty to keep you occupied in Kathmandu or Chitwan. The surrounding areas are fantastic for hiking or cycling, and you can take part in a number of adventure sports. Projects Abroad staff and volunteers are always around too, in case you require some company that reminds you of home!
Please be aware that most universities have deadlines by which time your Elective application paperwork must be completed. If your university needs information on the hospital or clinic in which you will be placed, or requires forms to be signed by your project supervisor, we strongly advise completing our application form at least one month before this deadline. We can only provide this detailed information once you have applied and been accepted onto an Elective placement with us.
You can join the Medicine Elective project in Nepal for one, two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
